CPE - Bird Navigation (English on use 5)

Read the text below. Use the word given in brackets to form a word that fits in the space.
The theory that each year the (migrate) of birds involves their travelling hundreds or thousands of kilometres from their nesting site finally gained acceptance towards the end of the eighteenth century. At the same time (find) revealed that, despite the distances involved, some birds returned year after year, often to the same nest. The question of how birds perform such (miracle) navigational feats has ever since provided a major puzzle to tease the enquiring minds of biologists and non-specialists alike. As a result, the phenomenon has provoked perhaps the most (imagine) theorising and (pain) research in the whole field of biological investigation. Now there are signs that at last the mystery has been solved. It has been suggested that a memorised map of (mistake) smells is utilised in conjunction with the position of the sun and an (aware) of magnetic fields. This is (suffice) to explain the navigational performances of homing pigeons. (predict), many people will disagree, thus illustrating what has been the one feature of the study of bird navigation which appears with (fail) regularity. It is probably true to say that not a single major (propose) as to how birds navigate has ever received whole-hearted support when initially advanced.
